V1, V2 2000 2003 Regression based retrievals for maps (not quantitative)
V3 2000 2009 Optimal estimation retrievals with error characterization. Accounted for loss of optical bench 1 in May 2001. (Deeter et al., JGR, 2003)
V4 2000 2012 Change from single, global apriori to climatology; log10(VMR) CO parameters; expanded forward model training set; Near Real Time (NRT) products. (Deeter et al., JGR, 2010)
V5 2000 2016 Added NIR (near-infrared) and multispectral (TIR+NIR) products; accounts for “geophysical noise”; added time dependent forward model to address instrument parameter changes. (Deeter et al., JGR, 2013; Worden et al., AnnGeo, 2014)
V6 2000 2017 Change from NCEP to MERRA reanalysis for more accurate T, H2O parameters; fixed geolocation and updated climatology for apriori profiles. (Deeter et al., AMT, 2014)
V7 2000 2020 Improved cloud detection; accounts for NO2 growth; consistent NIR calibration; optimized radiance bias correction; change to MERRA-2 reanalysis (Deeter et al., AMT, 2017)
V8 2000 2022 Time and water vapor dependent radiance bias correction accounts for drift and latitude dependence in CO VMR bias. (Deeter et al., AMT, 2019)
V9 2000 2025 Improved coverage over polluted land scenes due to revisions in cloud detection algorithm (Deeter et al., AMT, 2022)
V10 2000 2025 Similar to Version 9 with the addition of a lower tropospheric retrieval. The value of this new product is the stability of its algorithm, which is unaltered throughout the entire mission. Other changes include improved N2O modelling which will improve accuracy in the later years.

Product Notes:

Version 9 (V9): Level 2 and Level 3 retrieval products for CO for the years 2000 to 2025 have been released. Separate products are available for TIR-only, NIR-only and Joint (TIR-NIR) retrievals. For V9, revisions to the cloud detection algorithm yield substantially improved retrieval coverage for observations over land. The improved coverage should especially benefit studies of (1) regions with persistent clouds and (2) regions commonly affected by severe pollution (with large values of aerosol optical depth). Details of the revised algorithm and supporting case studies are described in Deeter et al., ‘Impacts of MOPITT cloud detection revisions on observation frequency and mapping of highly polluted scenes’, Remote Sens. Env., vol. 262, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2021.112516, 2021. V9 products also benefit from an improved calibration strategy for MOPITT’s NIR channels. The new NIR calibration strategy results in significantly reduced retrieval bias drift for NIR-only products between annual calibration events.  A validation paper for the V9 product is available here

Version 9 beta (V9b): Provisional "beta" products, subject to recalibration, are available from March 2018 until the end of the mission. Beta product files are indicated by filenames with a .beta.he5 extension and beta product directory names have the extension '.109' while archive product directories have the extension '.009'. When available, the archival product should be used rather than the beta product.

Version 8 (V8): Level 2 and Level 3 products are available for the MOPITT mission with archival products covering from March 2003 to March 2022. Product formats are the same as for V6 and V7. A validation paper for the V8 product is available here

Version 7 (V7): Level 2 and Level 3 archival products are available for the MOPITT mission through March 2020. Product formats are the same as V6. A validation paper for the V7 product is available here

Version 6 (V6): Level 2 and Level 3 products are available for the MOPITT mission through 2017.  Generally, V6 Level 2 and Level 3 products were made available between three weeks and two months after the actual observations, a result of the dependency on the MERRA reanalysis. The same three retrieval variants are offered for V6 that were introduced for V5 (i.e., TIR-only, NIR-only, and joint TIR/NIR products). V6 products are provided in the HDF-EOS5 format, which can not be opened and read with software tools developed for HDF4 files (e.g., MOPITT V4 and V5 products). A validation paper for the V6 product is available here

Version 5 (V5): Level 2 and Level 3 products for CO vertical profiles and total column were available for the MOPITT mission through 2016. V5 products are no longer available. Three Level 2 retrieval variants are offered for V5: A TIR-only product, similar to the V4 product; a new NIR-only product; and a new joint or multispectral TIR/NIR product. The V5 product is considered validated. A validation paper for the V5 product is available here

Version 4 (V4): Level 2 and Level 3 products for CO vertical profiles and total column were produced for observations between March 2000 and December 2012. V4 products are no longer available. A validation paper for the V4 product is available here.

Version 3 (V3): Level 2 and Level 3 products for CO vertical profiles and total column were produced for observations between March 2000 and July 2009.  V3 products are no longer publicly available. A validation paper for the V3 product is available here.

Version 2 (V2): Level 2 products were produced only immediately after launch and are no longer publicly available.
